GLASS IN THEORY

GLASS

In 1999, a series of coincidences or synchronicities led me to begin a BA (Hons) in Architectural Stained Glass at Swansea. I had no prior plan or desire to study glass at that time and only a very limited knowledge of the medium.
Contrary to many of the other students, I began designing windows with no reference to the established language of stained glass. I approached glass simply as another material like paper, wood or fabric but one with its own unique properties. These qualities opened up a new world of possibilities within my work, which at the time was predominantly pattern-based. I was, and still am, deeply in love with the process of traditional leaded windows, and also low temperature fusing of opaque glass for bowls and ornaments.

Much like the deep connection I feel to traditional craftsmanship through woodworking and textiles, working with glass revealed another lineage of making; one rooted in patience, precision and light where material, process, and meaning are shaped slowly and through which, I further understood my place within the continuum of the arts & crafts.

If you would like to commission a leaded window, please get in touch through the contact form. It is possible to encapsulate the leaded panels into double glazed units which can then be fitted directly into your frames to replace plain windows.
