SCULPTURE IN THEORY

THE THIRD DIMENSION

I use sculpture as a term that encompasses all of my three-dimensional work. Wood is almost always the medium, either as the material of the finished piece or as the 'master' from which moulds are made and the final piece is cast.
I have been carving and making things out of wood for as long as I can remember, and I feel an undeniable connection to the continuity of tradition when working with this medium.

It is a discipline that i have chosen to keep as authentic as possible, omitting to use power tools and instead working only by hand with vintage chisels, allowing me to tap seamlessly into the craft and explore the same sensations that everyone who has ever carved wood experiences; exactly the same decisions, dilemmas & challenges using exactly the same material and tools.

Woodworking, and carving in particular, is the closest thing I have found to a moving meditation. I have always felt, across all the disciplines I practice, a certain sensation. If you ever drew on the sole of your slipper with a biro when you were young, you know the feeling, a smooth & resistance free connection. It's that feeling throughout one's whole being. I experience it in all creative pursuits, but nothing compares to the speed and depth of immersion into the meditative state that carving provides.
